IB Math: Analysis & Approaches vs Applications & Interpretation
The two IB math routes suit very different students. A plain explanation of AA and AI, and how to know which fits.
International Baccalaureate students choose between two mathematics routes, and the choice matters more than many realise. Analysis and Approaches, usually shortened to AA, is the more traditional, calculus-heavy and algebra-focused path. Applications and Interpretation, or AI, leans toward statistics, modelling, and using mathematics in real-world contexts. Each is offered at Standard Level and Higher Level, so there are effectively four options, and they suit genuinely different students and goals.
The decision is not about which is easier. It is about fit. A student heading toward engineering, physics, or pure mathematics generally needs AA, because the algebraic and calculus foundations it builds are what those programs assume. A student drawn to the social sciences, design, business, or fields where data and modelling matter more than abstract calculus is often better served by AI, which plays to those strengths. Choosing the wrong route, or the wrong level, can make a student's diploma years harder than they need to be.
Both routes are demanding in their own way, and both end in external examinations that reward understanding rather than memorisation. The IB in general asks students to apply mathematics, communicate reasoning, and connect ideas across topics, which is precisely what students who relied on memorised procedures find difficult. There is also the internal assessment, the mathematical exploration, which is its own piece of work and a place where thoughtful support genuinely helps.
The statistics content, especially heavy in the AI route, is worth flagging. Statistics is consistently one of the areas students find least intuitive, and it happens to be my specialty. Whether a student is working through the data and modelling of AI or the probability components of AA, building real comfort with statistical reasoning rather than formula-following makes a noticeable difference.
