Alberta Math 30-1: How the 30% Diploma Exam Really Works

Math 30-1 ends in a diploma exam worth 30% of the final mark. What the exam looks like, what it weights, and how to prepare without panic.

Math 30-1 is Alberta's Grade 12 pre-calculus course, and it is the math stream most students need for university programs that involve calculus. It is also a diploma exam course, which changes how the whole year should be approached.

Here is the part that causes the most anxiety, stated plainly. The diploma exam is weighted at 30 percent of the final course mark, and the school-awarded mark makes up the other 70 percent. That weighting returned to 30 percent in 2023 and remains in place for the current school year. A strong year in class can be pulled down by a weak exam day, and a strong exam can lift a borderline class mark, so both halves matter.

The exam itself is built around three content areas: Relations and Functions, which is the largest share, Trigonometry, and Permutations, Combinations and the Binomial Theorem. It combines machine-scored questions with written-response questions, and students are given three hours with additional time available. The written-response portion is where preparation tends to pay off most, because partial understanding shows up clearly there in a way it does not on multiple choice.

The most common mistake I see is treating the diploma exam as a single event to cram for in June. It is better understood as the natural endpoint of a year where each unit was actually understood rather than survived. Students who kept their footing through Relations and Functions early in the year are in a far stronger position by exam season than students who patched over gaps and hoped.

Preparation that works tends to be steady and diagnostic. We identify which of the three content areas is weakest, rebuild the underlying concepts, and practise the written-response format deliberately so it holds up under exam pressure. Trigonometry in particular rewards understanding over memorisation, and that is where focused help makes the biggest difference.

If your student is heading into Math 30-1 or already feeling the weight of the diploma exam, the earlier we start the calmer the spring will be. Book a free intro call and we will build a realistic plan together.
